Background of the Study
Radio and television have become pivotal in shaping cultural narratives in Odigbo Local Government, Ondo State, influencing indigenous storytelling traditions. Traditionally, oral storytelling served as a medium for preserving history, moral values, and communal identity. However, the advent of broadcast media has introduced new storytelling techniques, altering narrative forms and audience engagement (Afolabi, 2023). While radio and television provide platforms for wider dissemination of local tales, they also risk diluting the authenticity and complexity of indigenous oral traditions. Scholars argue that the integration of modern media can either enrich or erode traditional storytelling practices (Olatunji, 2024). Recent studies suggest that media exposure has transformed narrative structures, introducing elements of dramatization and commercialization (Adebola, 2025). This study assesses how radio and television impact the content, style, and transmission of indigenous stories, examining both positive adaptations and potential cultural losses. Progress persists.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread reach of radio and television in Odigbo Local Government, indigenous storytelling faces challenges in maintaining its traditional form. The adoption of modern broadcast techniques has altered narrative content and audience perceptions, leading to potential erosion of cultural authenticity (Afolabi, 2023). Traditional storytellers express concerns over the commercialization and simplification of age-old tales, which may undermine the moral and historical depth of indigenous narratives (Olatunji, 2024). This shift raises issues regarding the future viability of oral traditions and the preservation of cultural heritage (Adebola, 2025). The study seeks to identify factors driving these changes and propose measures to safeguard indigenous storytelling.
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the influence of radio and television on the content of indigenous storytelling.
To examine changes in narrative styles due to modern media exposure.
To propose strategies for preserving traditional storytelling in the digital era.
Research Questions:
How do radio and television impact indigenous storytelling in Odigbo?
What changes in narrative structure are observed with media influence?
How can traditional storytelling be preserved in the age of broadcast media?
Research Hypotheses:
The integration of broadcast media significantly alters traditional narrative forms.
Exposure to radio and television leads to commercialization of indigenous stories.
Preservation strategies can mitigate the disruptive effects of modern media on storytelling.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the impact of radio and television on indigenous storytelling. It highlights the balance between modern media influence and cultural preservation, providing insights for media practitioners, cultural custodians, and policymakers. The findings contribute to academic discourse on media effects and inform strategies for maintaining the authenticity of oral traditions (Afolabi, 2023). Ultimately, the research supports sustainable cultural preservation in the digital age.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing the impact of radio and television on indigenous storytelling in Odigbo Local Government, Ondo State. It focuses on media influence, narrative changes, and preservation strategies, excluding other forms of digital media and non-indigenous storytelling.
Definitions of Terms:
Indigenous Storytelling: Traditional oral narratives that preserve cultural heritage and historical accounts.
